Captain Matthew Thomas

Known as Capt. Matt, I have been a flyfisher my entire life, and a professional fly fishing guide for over 10 years. Each spring you can find me on the flats of the Lower Florida Keys chasing my favorite fish the Silver King. I spend the rest of his year avoiding hurricanes in the cool, clear waters of the Roaring Fork Valley. As an Orvis endorsed guide, my commitment to fishing, the outdoors and conservation of these unique places is my passion.

“Captain Matt guides with a patient style that anyone can get along with. His time tested technique has proven effective with both novice and expert fly fishers alike”.

2009 will be my second year at the lodge and my ninth season guiding overall. A 12 year Colorado resident, I'm excited to be part of the fly fishing staff at our Lodge on the gold-metal Roaring Fork River. In addition, I'm lucky enough to guide extensively on the Gunnison and Frying Pan rivers, which are also well known. In 2007, I bought a 13' DRE raft with a fancy fishing frame which I try to take on the river daily, with clients or friends. This craft has been essential in fishing with extreme comfort and safety.

I graduated from Colorado College in 1999 with a double major in Spanish and history. Its been hard to leave this state since then but I did manage to work in Patagonia, Chile as a fishing guide for a few seasons as well. In the winter, I translate Spanish, work in Aspen, and will start a Masters degree to boot. The Roaring Fork is an outstanding river in any season with great hatches and football sized rainbow trout. I look forward to sharing this jewel of a river with customers this season.

A Florida native and diehard saltwater fisherman, I moved to the Roaring Fork Valley to primarily ski nearly 13 years ago. A friend and guide Scott Klahn turned me on to this fly fishing thing after a great winter of skiing. Years later I found a location, where my vision for the perfect fishing/recreation Lodge was born. Please come, I like to share...
